A word about illustration.

This is a gentle tale. At first came the map. Independently, two readers suggested that might be a useful addition and I very much agreed. Further illustrations suggested themselves and, by adopting a naive style, a distinctly old-fashioned identity was created.

Chris Fairbairn is a brilliant artist. He has been one of my closest friends for the longest time – over thirty-five years. I knew he would instinctively recognise the brief. I could not be more delighted with the outcome. The format of the book being one of lengthy chapters is, I think, helped along by the prospect of the next of these charming motifs.

Not every story nor style will suit the illustrated arrangement but I hope you will agree that in this case it is a welcome enhancement.
